The music world has officially been taken by storm by KATSEYE, the highly-anticipated girl group forged from an unprecedented partnership between K-pop giant HYBE and American record label Geffen Records (Universal Music Group). They are the living model for a new generation of international musicians, not simply another pop group.
Here is all the information you need to know about the sextet that is skillfully fusing the universality of Western pop with the exacting methodology of K-pop.
The New Pop Star Academy
KATSEYE's journey to the global stage was unlike any other. The group was the result of a massive 18-month talent search and the subsequent 2023 reality competition, “The Debut: Dream Academy.”
- HYBE X Geffen : The goal of this partnership was to form a genuinely global group with a U.S. basis, but developed using HYBE's famously rigorous and effective K-pop training system.
- The Process : Over 120,000 applicants vied for a spot, with 20 trainees undergoing intense evaluation in dance, vocals, and star quality.
- The Documentary : Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE, a Netflix documentary series, recorded the full high-stakes procedure, including the psychological and physical toll of the training, offering the world an unvarnished glimpse at what it takes to debut under this innovative method.
Meet the Global Six
Selected in the live finale, KATSEYE is a diverse six-member group, each bringing a unique background and talent to the mix (ages in November 2025) :
- Sophia Laforteza (age 22, Origin / Ethnicity : Philippines). She won first place in the competition and serves as the group's leader and lead vocalist.
- Lara Rajagopalan (age 20, Origin / Ethnicity : U.S. (Indian) ). Known for her distinct vocals and impeccable fashion sense.
- Daniela Avanzini (age 21, Origin / Ethnicity : U.S. (Venezuelan-Cuban) ). A formidable dancer with experience competing on So You Think You Can Dance?
- Megan Skiendiel (age 19, Origin / Ethnicity : (Chinese/Singaporean) ). An all-rounder with modeling experience and acting credits on Disney's Sydney to the Max.
- Manon Bannerman (age 23, Origin / Ethnicity : Switzerland (Swiss/Italian/Ghanaian) ). A model who brings songwriting and visual arts talents to the group.
- Jeong Yoonchae (age 17, Origin / Ethnicity : South Korea). The group's youngest member and the only South Korean, bringing a refined K-pop training background.
Explosive Debut and Chart Success
After their formation, KATSEYE didn't waste any time establishing themselves as a force in music.
In June 2024, the group made their official debut with the dance-pop tune "Debut," which boosts confidence. Soon after, they had their first big hit, "Touch." The song had widespread resonance, going viral and became a well-liked dance challenge that achieved chart rankings in several countries, including the Philippines, New Zealand, and South Korea.
Their first Extended Play (EP), SIS (Soft Is Strong), was released in August 2024 as a result of their momentum. A significant accomplishment for a debut act, the EP charted nicely and peaked at #119 on the US Billboard 200.
The Futue Is Global
With a diverse lineup, a rigorous training foundation, and the backing of two of the world's largest music companies, KATSEYE is poised to be more than just a successful girl group, they are a cultural phenomenon.
In addition to dominating the charts, KATSEYE is opening the door for the discovery and development of future worldwide pop performers by demonstrating how the K-pop system can be tailored and localized to support musicians with a global appeal. This is only the beginning, so pay attention to these six stars.
